One of My Favorite Bible Verses: because really, it is possible to pick just one?
“And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Micah 6:8

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Matthew 6:33

Significant Life Experiences that led me to HLCS: If I could answer in one word it would be… God. He called, I answered. I come to Harbor Light with 13 years of public school classroom teaching experience. I am passionate about teaching and learning and the administrator position at Harbor Light piqued my interest because it allows me to shift my focus to Christ-centered education. This position would allow my school home and my church home to become ONE. While I bring with me a host of experiences and strengths from the academic arena, it is the work that God continues to do inside of me that gives me confidence in my ability to lead with boldness, and character.

I Love HLCS Because…of the family and love that radiates through the halls. God’s love is on full display when you see a high school student giving attention to a preschooler, or when students go out of their way to help each other out. HLCS is a place like no other.

Activities & Hobbies I Enjoy: Spending time with my husband Jordan, and girls Daphne, Audrey, and Meredith is my absolute favorite thing to do. Whether we are having dinner with friends, going on a bike ride, or snuggling up to watch a movie, I love spending time with my crew. I also love to run, go to the beach, and read!

One of My Favorite Bible Verses: My favorite verse is Jeremiah 29:11, which says, “‘I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘Plans to prosper you and not to harm you; plans to give you a hope and a future.'” I believe that my days as a student here prepared in me a love for this school which grows stronger each day. His plan for my future to return here as a teacher was one He cultivated in my heart. I will be forever grateful to the Lord for this school and what it has done for me and my children. My prayer is that each day I teach I might have a chance to help my students as they grow, prosper, and seek the Lord’s will for their futures.

Significant Life Experiences that led me to HLCS: HLCS has been my home forever. I started at HLCS as a student in sixth grade, and continued all the way through graduation. During my time here and through my interactions with my teachers, I developed a love for teaching and children. After studying at Taylor University, I was blessed enough to be able to return to teach at Harbor Light, transitioning to full-time once my children were school-aged, and, now that they have all graduated, moving into the position of Head of Elementary Instruction!

I Love HLCS Because…This place is not just a school- it is a family. I knew that my own children were loved and well-taken-care-of as they learned each day, and the children God gives me as students become like my own.

Activities & Hobbies I Enjoy: I love to play tennis!

One of My Favorite Bible Verses: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6

Significant Life Experiences that led me to HLCS: God blessed me abundantly when the administrative assistant position became available at HLCS. Having our children in a Christian school has always been a part of our life, and having the chance for our children to come to HLCS has proven to be one of the most amazing experiences I could have asked for. Every day I am excited to be able to come to my job. I love every single aspect of it. We are all incredibly blessed by the excellent staff and volunteers that make up Harbor Light Christian School.

I Love HLCS Because… well there probably isn’t enough room on the page to share with you why I love HLCS!!! I can’t pick only one thing! I love the level of education, the excellent teachers, amazing staff, coaches and volunteers, the love and friendship the kids have with each other, the fact that God’s love is shown in everything that we do. All of these add up to what makes HLCS such an amazing school.  I love everything about HLCS!! We have amazing parents that support and help out so much, we have students that love to be here, and represent Christ in all that they do, we have staff members that love their jobs, each other, and their students. HLCS is not just a school where excellence in education is taught, but it is a family, where the love of Christ is shown daily, where we are encouraged to step out and step up for Christ, and where we can have peace in the knowledge that our children will be supported and loved at all times.

Activities & Hobbies I Enjoy: I love spending time with my family!! I have three children, and the most wonderful husband of 20+ years that God has blessed me with. We love sitting outside around a big bonfire in the spring and fall months, boating in the summer, and watching the kids ski and snowboard in the winter. I love to travel, and my favorite place to go is to South Carolina. I also enjoy reading and being involved with our church.

One of My Favorite Bible Verses:  “For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power love and self control.” 2 Timothy 1:7

Significant Life Experiences That Led Me to HLCS:  After years of wanting to enroll our children : Having my teenager acknowledge that he wanted to be here. Then realizing we needed to be here. As soon as we enrolled I felt God was working not only our children but our family.

I Love HLCS because…  It is more than a school.

Activities & hobbies I enjoy:  Spending time with all our family. Watching all the sports the kids are involved in. Family walks.

o is to South Carolina. I also enjoy reading and being involved with our church.

Bachelor’s Degree in Physics and English from Alma College

Master’s Degree in Physics from Northern Illinois University

One of My Favorite Bible Verses:  “God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also” (Gen. 1:16). Because, oh by the way, there was a little time left that day, so He also made a trillion or so stars. What an Amazing God!

Significant Life Experiences That Led Me to HLCS: I played baseball at Alma College and earned a B.S. in Physics with an English double major and a Math minor. After graduation, I served as Sports Information Director there for two years, where I was responsible for gameday management, statistics, and media and public relations. From there, I went on to Northern Illinois University to conduct research in High Energy Physics at Fermilab and earn an MS in Physics. While at NIU, I also worked part-time in athletics – doing everything from talent stats for TV broadcasts to sideline management and press conferences. Upon completion of my Master’s degree, I accepted a position within the Physics department at The University of Chicago, where I worked for 7 years before heading back to Michigan in 2017.

I have conducted research at a national lab, I have taught classes at a large state college, I have worked in one of the most prestigious physics departments in the world – but there was something incredibly special about the opportunity to come home and help make a difference in the lives of young men and women who are working hard to become shining lights in this world.

I Love HLCS because…  The staff is smart and kind. The students are eager and devoted. And the administration is caring and wise. HLCS gets that it is important to prepare young people to excel as students, but even more important to prepare them to be good people.

Activities & hobbies I enjoy:  I enjoy playing and coaching sports and spending time outdoors with family and friends.

Barnes Mrs.

One of My Favorite Bible Verses:  “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” James 4:7-8

Significant Life Experiences That Led Me to HLCS:  The Lord made it very clear to me and my husband that we were to send our daughter to HLCS for Kindergarten. In looking for ways to adjust to her going to school 4 days a week I began applying for jobs and HLCS seemed an obvious choice as I was driving here every day anyway! Little did I know what the Lord had in store. He really blesses us beyond what we can imagine sometimes. It is an honor and privilege to work here.

I Love HLCS Because…  Each and every person that works here has a heart for the Lord and truly seeks His will as they pour themselves into their jobs, their relationships with the students as well as with one another. It is truly a family and I can’t believe I get to be a part of it!

Activities & Hobbies I Enjoy:  I love spending time with the Lord, reading, kayaking, doing puzzles, playing games, and taking long family walks with my husband, daughter and our sweet dog, Macy.

One of My Favorite Bible Verses: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Isaiah 41:10

Significant Life Experiences that led me to HLCS: I am blessed to also be a part of the mission and educational trips that occur at our high school and plan and travel with our students, who amaze me at every turn! We have some incredible students here at HLCS that not only honor God, but our school as well. That is what led me to working at HLCS – to be a part of God’s work here with our students. It feels like my children don’t just have friends at HLCS but have extended family here.

I love HLCS Because… of the family atmosphere among the students and families.

Activities & Hobbies I Enjoy: I enjoy hiking, biking, traveling and spending time in this beautiful place we are blessed to live!

One of My Favorite Bible Verses: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

Significant Life Experiences That Led Me to HLCS: In April of 2021 I felt God’s calling to talk with Kelly about a potential position at HLCS. When I moved back to northern Michigan eight years ago I took an entry level job at the local hospital foundation. Although this was not my first choice of jobs, God had big plans. Through my time there I was promoted to Development Officer which taught me the broad basics of fundraising. After many discussions and prayers with Kelly this spring, a position opened up and I began my journey with HLCS. I truly believe that God ordained my steps through the hospital foundation to bring me to Harbor Light for such a time as this.

I Love HLCS Because… HLCS had a direct impact on my life. I graduated from HLCS in 2003 and know the power of God fearing teachers, staff, and coaches. All of whom spoke into my life not only academically or through athletics, but more importantly spiritually.

Activities & Hobbies I Enjoy: I enjoy spending time with my family, amateur gardening, running, and generally being outdoors.

One of My Favorite Bible Verses: “But as it is written, eye hat not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9

Significant Life Experiences That Led Me to HLCS: I have a degree in Dance from the University of Michigan. After graduating in 2009, I spent a number of years teaching dance in various ways throughout Northern Michigan. I met my husband Zach through Jiu Jitsu, and we married and started a family. For 8 years I was a stay-at-home mom for our 3 boys, working as a musician on the side. We had intended only to send our oldest son to school this year, but in October, a position opened up in the office, and I was hired! Amazingly, around that same time, 2 spots had opened up in the classes we needed for our 2 other sons, so now…we are all here! It was a step outside my comfort zone, but it was definitely God-directed. Now I use the skills I’ve accumulated over years and years of involvement in the Performing Arts to help further the mission of HLCS!

I Love HLCS Because… we have lots of family here in the school. Beyond that- the school itself feels like a giant family. I love that my kids are getting a solid foundation in the Word of God every day, thanks to their incredible teachers, and that they are part of a wholesome sports culture. There’s a true sense of everyone working hard together for a much bigger goal- training leaders for the Kingdom.

Activities & Hobbies I Enjoy: I enjoy spending time with my horse and dogs, playing music, and being with my family!
